Carleton Monroe Winslow, Sr. was born in Damariscotta, Maine, on December 27, 1876. He studied architecture at the Art Institute of Chicago and did additional coursework at the EĢcole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Winslow moved to Los Angeles in 1917, where he contributed to the design of the Los Angeles Public Library headquarters building.
